We had to go out to a nice club to celebrate the end of the trip. We found an open bar, that ment pay R$30 (about 10 euros) and drink whatever you want. In the meanwhile they had 3 DJ's playing house. In my ears that was a great party, and it was. Off course the DJ's weren't so well as in Amsterdam, but still nice. In the early morning we were finally asleep.

In the afternoon I picket up my laundry which I almost forgot and mailed with Carlos to meet him again in Sao Paulo. Arranged a bus ticket for the night and so I left the last place of my trip trough Brazil at 19 o'clock. Sad moment...

The bus trip was alright however, on the bus were a lot of resellers, doing some illegal smuggling from Paraguay. There they buy cheap watches, cell phones and more electronic stuff, smuggle, and sell it for more in Sao Paulo. But what happened as the police came to search the bus. The police thinks they earn a little wage and want more, so they call a price the resellers have to pay and they do. One of the resellers was walking trough the bus collecting cash. I was amazed by the business, though it was nice to see the corrupt police in a personal situation like this.

We didn´t go with a tour as we were quite adventurous today, and we were send the wrong way two times. After an hour of searching and asking we were at the border. Stamped our passports and went with two other busses to the Iguaçu Falls. Really nice - but touristic - park with walking paths leading to the best spots. We had some close-up and panoramic views and the buldering sounds were overwhelming.

For a touristic price we could go on a boat and go into the waterfall, so we did... we were tourist afterall. Really nice to feel the power of the water so close. So after 3 rounds we went to the little beach were the fish sucked on your toes, saw loads of butterfllies, and pictured pretty birds that found the attention of the camera´s rather interesting. Not to forget the Coati Racoon that wanted to rob my backpack with cakes... Funny creatures. There were so many nice spots that at 5 we didn´t see it all, we missed one far end of the falls, but we were tired, ate icecream and went back to the hostel.

Mieke left allready and I met two new dutchies from Tilburg, drunk, drank, and had more drinks.

4 day Pantanal tag:travellerspoint.com,2009-04-07:/blog/?domain=debrick&thisblog_entryid=42&entryid=157410 2009-04-07T15:16:49Z 2009-04-07T15:04:01Z Day 1) In the morning I went in a van to the Pantanal. I met two Dutch but they stayed in another lodge. Just before dinner I arrived in the lodge and the owner showed me around... Just before dinner I arrived in the lodge and the owner showed me around... Swimming pool, volleyball field, pool tables, TV and a piano... what! a piano! Of all places in Brazil, you find a piano in the middle of freaking nowhere, the Pantanal. But I was the happiest lad of the day.

I met a couple from Amsterdam and a Belgium guy. Had a nice night with some beers.

Day 2) Early in the morning it was still dark when I went to see some birds at sunrise. That was awesome. The view is amazing, and when 5 big blue parrots are flying right for the rising sun, you can feel a rush of excitement. After breakie the tour started with a boat trip. We saw lots of birds including parrots and cacatoes. Alligators, really big guinnypigs (dont know the name anymore), and a varaan. Excited we were back in the lodge where we had lunch and it was time for a safari on truck and hiking. Many more animals were seen, again lots of birds and more of the same big animals. However it´s nice to see nice things twice. After sunset we were still driving to see the fireflies (whole fields of ´em) and the aligators in the lake. The driver had a spotlight and all the eyes lit up, hundreds maybe more than 500 eyes were in the lake...

Day 3) Again we went to see the sunrise, I told more people about the nice view, so this time it was also `gezellig´ (no translation). In the morning we did horsebackriding. Really exciting to ride through the Pantanal on a horse. You dont see any animals but in gallop trough the fields is owesome. The afternoon was filled with Piranja fishing. I cought 5 this time and not only piranjas, there were also some catfish in between. For dinner we ate ´em all... It was the last night so we drunk a bit more than usual, and with more people, a Denish girl, a couple from Slowaky and a just-married-Rio de Janeiro-couple.

Day 4) No sunrise today, we did the boattrip again, but no new animals seen. However, I could make a more close-up photo of a kingfisher. In the afternoon we had to leave the lodge to go back to Campo Grande again. Best time so far! Pantanal is good stuff!

ps. How many musquito bites do you think I got in those last 4 days? ... more than 716... still the Pantanal is good stuff!

Actually, when we were back in the hostel, I had to stay awake ´cause my plane left at 3 in the morning. Went to the airport at 1 by cab and waited, waited more... I had to change flight in Brasilia to Campo Grande where I arrived in the early afternoon. Normally I would drop my stuff and go into town, however, I got a nasty jungle bacteria in my belly and spended the afternoon in bed and the toilet. At 7 o´clock, I got patatoes, carrots and onions which combined in a pan to what we call `hutspot`, good stuff... Hopefully my belly liked that since I wanted to go to the Pantanal the next day. And it did... not. I spend another day in Campo Grande to recover fully. Saw the city and went to the shopping centre for some nice t-shirts. At night there was a party, during the day it was a place were tractors were sold, in the afternoon there was a rodeo and at night it was party time. So a guy from the hostel and me were dancing there and had fun with some local girls. I felt better anyway.

The first place to see was a lake with huge waterlillies. The leafs of this waterlilly could carry a human baby and were about 1,5 to 2 meters in diameter. We went to the lodge dumped our stuff and went to see the area by canoe. Huge rivers again and in a small side river we went Piranja fishing. I cought none... As the sun went down the swallows went to sleep on an island. This is an incredible view. The boat lied in front of the island and about a 100 000 birds came down from the sky, swooped over our boat to land somewhere in a bush or tree. In the evening we had dinner with rice and beans whereafter I went to sleep to wake up early the next day.

At 5 everybody woke up to pack our stuff to make a long hike. We saw an anteter, a tirantula spider, tracks of a Puma, snakes, monkeys, kakatoes, parrots, and many more beautiful birds. The guide was really good as he explained almost everything we saw. He showed us how to climb a palmtree, so everybody tried. Only Boris and me could climb more than a few feet. And he showed how to attract animals. A palmleaf stiking over his knife made a sound that is comparable with the sound of a bird in need. As the other animals hear that they will come over to have a look. In this way you dont have to find the animals, they will find you. And if you were an indian, you shoot with a poisonous arrow and have dinner.

After lunch in the lodge we prepaired for a night in the jungle. Around 3 we found a nice place. Placed some big branches for the hommocks, made a fire and sang songs untill dinner was ready. The guide made a whole chicken on a stick and rice in a pan. We ate from leafs and had selfmade spoons made out of a branch.

During the night we heard the most weird sounds of monkeys, birds, insects and probably a whole bunch of other night animals... CRACK-BOOM! In the middle of the night everybody woke up scared. We all heard a loud cracking noice and a big smash. We checked it out and apparently an old big tree broke in two and came down 4 meters away from the canoe. Being amazed that the tree didn´t hit anything we went to sleep again.

In the morning it soon was time to pack everything to see some more animals and go back to the lodge. This time we saw dolphins, more monkeys and again a snake. The guide tried to catch the snake and he did, but the snake went into the boat. Little panic in the boat as he swam around in the boat. I was too late and it bit my ankle. In pain we went back to the lodge as fast as posible were bandage and painkillers waited for me. Luckily for me it was no poisones snake. A couple hours later I was back in the hostel were a docter came to have a look and he told me I would be all right. So I´ll have a scar that lets me remember this unfaithfull day.

We flew over the Amazone! The view was a beauty. An hour later we arrived in Manaus, I bought my ticket to Campo Grande for the 1st of april, and we went to the hostel. Funny enough we met some people again we met earlier in Pipa and Jeri. We thought it would be nice to eat nice for once again, so we went to a BBQ restaunt, paid 5 times more than we usualy do, but we could eat the nicest food, brocolli, appel salads and the best meat from the BBQ. Tomorrow I'm leaving for a 3 day hike in the forest.

Slippers (flip-flops), bags, balls and more. Many people worked in the latex business, however the whole family couldn´t depend on it totally. So they held chickens for meat or the men went into the forest to kill a Armadillo/up the river to fish for fish. Other food was basic, rice, beans and banana´s from the forest.

The night was more spectacular as we went for crokodile hunting! We sat in a canoe, with flashlights and searched for two bright eyes on a background of the dark forest. After a minute or 30 we didn´t find any so on of the guides went into the water to catch one himself and 10 minutes later he came back with a baby crok. Amazing!

We slept in hammocks hearing all the sounds from the rainforest. Bugs, birds, monkeys and probably many more animals were cracking, tsirping, singing and screaming.

In the morning we went for a 5 hour hike into the jungle to see the old big trees of about 1200 years old. On the way the guide showed us how to make a roof with varaan-leafs, how to make a backpack with the same leafs and the wonderfull fruits and medicine of the forest. Afer more then 2 hours we were in the area were we encountered the big trees. Amazingly big and tall. You´d need 26 people holding hands to surround the tree. Imagine yourself standing 1200 years at the same place, weird ain´t it...

We had dinner (rice and beans) and went back to Alter do Chão. We saw a beautiful sunset and in Alter do Chão we celebrated that we were back to civelization with some beers.

In a nearby town we had to change to a 4-wheel dive bus. The road to Jeri was over sandy roads and the beach. And if you want to see the strange view of cows on the beach, go to Jeri. We had heard about this amazing hostel, and indeed it was. We had dinner and went to sleep quickly.

In the afternoon I met with the Argentian girls of day one, and a guy from Amsterdam. We spended the afternoon with beach tennis and swimming.

Ifat was on her way to Jericaocaora and I wanted to head north too, soo we left this night to the bus to fortaleza.

It was lunchtime allready, so I ate and went back to the hostel. Chilled out in the hostel for the rest of the afternoon in my hammock. Then Ifat, an Israelish girl, came to the hostel. She was travelling alone like me and she searched for someone to have dinner with, done. We spended the rest of the evening in a bar accompanied by beers.

After dinner I went to a pub with a Brazilian guy, he didnt speak English (not one word) so he just talked in Portuguese, and he talked a lot. The more beers we drunk, the more I could understand. But that was probably due to the fact that the level of conversation dropped withevery beer we drunk. We ended up with English speaking girls from Argentinia. Pipa started off with lots of laughter.

In the afternoon I went into town, had some lunch, saw the beach, lay down there for a while, dinner, beer and sleep. The next day I wanted to take the bus with the end destination Pipa.

In Savador she left and my first 6 of the 20 hours-during bus trip was done. Had dinner at Maccie D´s and at 22 hours my bus left from Salvador to Maceio. 10 hours later, my neck was bended wrong from the sleeping in a chear, but I got out alive. Only 4 hours of bus riding left to Maragogi. This was a nice trip during daylight in a beautyful nature setting. Little mountains and countryside rivers. Then in the end I began to see palmtrees and a turqoise ocean... I was in Maragogi!

Lençois > Salvador ... Salvador > Maragogi

I wasn´t as touristic as I´d expected. On the one hand it´s nice, but it would be harder to meet new people and I left so many behind in Lençois. I booked my hostel with swimmingpool and went into town for a drink and some dinner. One funny guy from sweeden allready had enough vodka red bull and began to talk to me. Afterall it´s always easy to meet new people...

In the evening, when I was feeling a bit better, we went into town because there was a Capoeira play. These guys were freaking fast and bendy. Walking on hands, bending backs horizontally, and more amazing stuff. On one square meter they swung their legs over each others heads.

These guys would hold this position for some seconds!

the two day hike tag:travellerspoint.com,2009-03-10:/blog/?domain=debrick&thisblog_entryid=22&entryid=154671 2009-03-11T20:07:37Z 2009-03-10T20:04:23Z Today was going to be exciting. The very first mountain we had to walk was immediately the hardest one. Freaking steep hills what ment resting and drinking every 5 - 10 minutes for 1,5 hour. But, we made it and only that was allready rewarding. We went to see a waterfall and had lunch there. After lunch we spotted this rat-snake.

In the afternoon we went to a second waterfall, this time a broad one, and set up camp there. Camp would mean, rolled out our mats and sleeping bags... We swam around played some simple games like, what do you see in that cloud and the dilemma game. But it was fun. The rasta-girl made a 6 person dinner on a selfmade fire including; rice, pancaces, stoganoff, vegetables and cous-cous. Amazing.
DSC00848.jpg
As it became dark and cold after 19 o´clock we closed our eyes, we´d wake up at 6 am. as the sun would rise above the mountain. Nice view from under the rock, a red/yellow sky had a big contrast to the mountain in font of us. We packed our stuff and went to see the third and last waterfall. This time we had to climb vertical mountainwalls, crouch through little gaps and swim to actually get to the waterfall. We saw some amazing birds and I was allmost picked by a black wasp. If it did pick me, i´d be having a fever within an hour, so I was lucky.

This waterfall was AMAZING! It was a half round single drop waterfall of about a hundred meters high. And we got to swim under it! We went back, found some snake skin, had lunch and finally got back to town.

In the night there was a big party since the owner of the hostel celebrated her birthday. We drunk wine and coke (strangest combination, especially when it is with Brazilian wine), caprinha´s and beers. At 5 o´clock I finally found my bed.
